On 20 and 21 November 2019, the XXVI EPP Congress took place in Zagreb.
On 20 November 2019, the EUCDW held its Board meeting to prepare the Congress and to elect a new EUCDW Vice President, Cindy Franssen. Mrs Franssen is a member of the European Parliament from Belgium and active in the committee on employment and social affairs, the committee on environtment, public health and food safety and the committee on non-discrimination and gender equality of the European Parliament.
On day 1, the European People’s Party Congress overwhelmingly elected Donald Tusk as the EPP President with 491 in favour (93%) and 37 against. His Presidency will start on 1 December 2019. The plenary session featured addresses of European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen, the EPP’s EU heads of State and government, Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament Manfred Weber, as well as party and opposition leaders.
On day 2, the EPP Congress delegates debated how the party can take the lead in the fight against climate change by implementing sustainable policies. The newly elected EPP President Donald Tuskcommitted to five youth pledges as proposed and voted on by the delegates. These pledges demonstrate the party’s commitment to engaging young people and making sure their voice is heard. The pledges can be found here: http://epptalks.myepp.eu/home/
